Tuyen Van Huynh
Reincarnation of Mercury Knight/Zoisite
Nicknames: Timmy (old childhood nickname)
Gender: male
Apparent Age: 15
What “Era” do they hail from? Modern
Hobbies taking things (especially electronics) apart and putting them back together (sometimes in a different configuration), singing karaoke, watching the stars, enjoys both science fiction and science fact, has been known to steal small items just to see if he can
Bad Habits: taking things apart, stealing, chewing on pencils and sometimes other non-food things, living on caffeine
Personality: Tuyen is a genuinely nice, easygoing guy. He's fairly extroverted and gets along with a wide variety of people, but he's not one of the popular kids and doesn't count himself as a member of any of the school's cliques. He would rather have a few close friends than a lot of mere acquaintances.
He's very intelligent, but also has a strong mischievous streak, and thus doesn't always use his smarts for good. Ever since he was a young child, Tuyen has enjoyed taking things apart, especially electronics, and putting them back together... or reassembling the parts into something else entirely. He's been known to play tricks on some of his less intelligent or less well-behaved classmates, if he feels they deserve it, and is good at getting away with it, too. Another thing he's proven good at getting away with is shoplifting, which he does more for the challenge of it rather than out of necessity. As he gets older the potential consequences of being caught get worse, but so does the rush of getting away with it.
Despite his good looks and intelligence, deep down Tuyen is very insecure. He feels a lot of pressure from his parents and teachers to study hard and get high marks, and to someday live out his dream of becoming a famous astrophysicist. While he's glad to have so much support for his dream, he worries nothing he ever does will be good enough to live up to the lofty expectations that have been placed on him.
Appearance: Tuyen is only 5'5" but looks taller because his body is very thin and gangly, looking like he's all arms and legs. His skin is the pale shade of someone who doesn't get out nearly enough, almost as pale as his hair, which he's bleached out completely white. His hair is short but messy; his parents think he never bothers to comb it, but really he spends 15-20 minutes every day making it look just the way he wants it. His face is long with a pointed chin and his eyes are a dark red behind a pair of oval glasses (which he actually needs to see). His ears, hands and feet are all slightly large, but nothing so big they look out of place.
Though his parents prefer him to wear dress shirts and slacks, sometimes made even more formal by the addition of a blazer and/or a tie, Tuyen prefers to dress casually, such as jeans or cargo shorts with t-shirts or polos. He'll wear just about any color, but lately finds himself drawn more to the blue end of the spectrum. And although he owns dress shoes that are kept polished and in near perfect condition he doesn't wear them unless his parents insist. His usual shoes are a pair of well-loved formerly white sneakers, now irreparably soiled.
Although he loves costumes and his favorite holiday is Halloween, he hasn't yet forayed into cosplay. That's not for lack of wanting, but because his parents think dressing up in costumes is a silly and immature thing to do and try to discourage it. They don't even like him dressing up to go to a Halloween party or give out candy to the little kids, but they try to put up with it on that one day because it's an American tradition and they want so much to fit in here.
Tuyen has a scar on his right knee where he fell on some broken glass as a child while playing in an old abandoned house on his street. He had to get stitches and a tetanus shot after that one. He also has a small tattoo of a UFO on his left shoulder that he did himself because he loves space stuff. It's not much, but it makes him feel like a badass and a rebel, since his parents would never have let him have it if they knew. He always keeps it covered when they're around, but often shows it off to friends at school and likes to wear a tank top under his shirts so he can take his shirt off and show his tattoo while he's out around town on his own.
Family and Close Ties:
Duc Thanh Huynh, age 40, is a science professor at the local college. He's very strict with his son and wants him to study hard and become a successful astrophysicist one day. Tuyen is glad his father supports his dreams, but sometimes resents the pressure put on him to study hard and be great at everything he does.
Mai Linh Tran (Vietnamese women traditionally keep their own last names after marriage), age 38, is a doting stay at home mother who gives her children praise and support in all they do. Even though Tuyen loves his mother, he often feels smothered by all the attention she gives and wishes she would lighten up on that. He also kind of wishes she would get a job, because he's tired of having to explain how yes, she's a stay at home mom, and yes, it's by choice.
Hoa Van Huynh (it's common for Vietnamese siblings to have the same middle name), age 18, is a high school senior who is just getting past the stage of being totally embarrassed by her little brother. She's the only one in the family who knows about Tuyen's secret tattoo and how he sneaks around and does what he wants behind his parents' backs, and those secrets have helped form a deeper bond between the two siblings. Oftentimes she'll help him sneak around and cover for him with their parents when he's gone. If she's in a good mood she won't even ask him a favor in return.
Tuyen's parents are still very much in love even after being married for almost 20 years. They're very reserved, however, and don't do a lot of PDAs. On a rare occasion they may give a peck on the cheek in front of others but little else. In private they can be very affectionate, though, and they have a very healthy sex life despite how long they've been married. Tuyen's mother is starting to feel her biological clock ticking and wants to have another baby before she gets too old, while her husband feels they have enough. They occasionally get into arguments about that, but they can never stay mad at each other for long. She feels like she may be wearing him down on it, though, so maybe there's another child in their future?
Tuyen's parents immigrated from Vietnam shortly after their marriage in search of a better life for themselves and their future children. The pair learned English by immersion and both worked at whatever jobs they could find until Hoa was born. When they couldn't afford childcare for the infant, Mai chose not to go back to work and instead stayed home to raise their daughter, and their son, too, once he came along. As his English improved, Duc was able to finally put his teaching degree to some use starting out as a teaching assistant, then a middle school teacher, eventually (with some additional schooling they couldn't really afford at the time, but that he convinced his wife was a good investment... and his school was at night, which put a strain on the marriage for a few years there) working his way up to college professor.
The children were raised as American as their immigrant parents could manage, speaking only English at home, eating typically American foods, celebrating all the major holidays that "normal" Americans did... As a result, the children know very little about Vietnam and even less of the Vietnamese language. They sometimes wish their parents hadn't raised them quite so American so they would know more about their parents' native language and culture.
(Past Incarnations)
He has held a position of servitude under both Endymion (serving as a guardian and advisor) and Beryl (serving as an evil minion). He is still bound to Endymion (and maybe still corruptible by Beryl or other evil entities, but let's hope not!)
Sailor Mercury is his “Senshi Counterpart” and they were close for a while back in the Silver Millennium.
He was also close with his fellow Shitennou throughout all their past incarnations. He was especially close to Kunzite; his relationships with the others were more like familial rivalries.
History: The first life that concerns us was way back in the Golden Era. He wasn't one of the first knights to be discovered (created?) but he played an important role in helping to establish and defend the planet of scientists who were studying the sun from Mercury. Unfortunately, his other important role was to sacrifice himself to help save the Sol System from destruction after a planet exploded (helping to form the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter).
His next important life was during the Silver Millennium era, where he was reincarnated on Earth as one of the Four Heavenly Kings (the king of Europe) and was made one of Endymion's guardians and advisors. While helping Endymion sneak around to have secret meetings with the Moon Princess he'd fallen for, he met the Princess of Mercury. The two became close, at least until Beryl convinced the kings that the princesses they were hanging out with were only using them. That time the four died while confronting the princesses in the battle between Beryl's forces and the people of the Moon Kingdom.
He was reborn into the modern world as one of Beryl's minions. He used his mastery of disguise and the power of TV to help search for the Ginzuishou. He discovered Sailor Moon had it and used subliminal messages to brainwash people to make them go after the crystal for him. After Sailor Moon's powers didn't work on him, he was killed by Sailor Venus. That was around 1992.
Tuyen was born January 8th, 1999 in Anaheim, California, the second child of immigrant parents from Vietnam. He was a happy baby who grew into a precocious little boy who knew all his ABCs, his numbers up to 20 and how to do very simple math before he even got into kindergarten. As a kindergartener he rechristened himself Timmy, which he called his "American name" to make it easier on himself and those around him to pronounce and remember his name. Despite that he was named for a deceased uncle, his parents didn't discourage the nickname, which stuck with him until he entered high school, when he decided Timmy was too childish and went back to his original name. His family and classmates still sometimes slipped up and used the nickname, though, being used to it over all those years. No matter which name he used, he was always good in school, and in math and science especially. His only weak subject was gym class, because he wasn't very strong or athletic. His biggest hero was Neil DeGrasse Tyson, whom he hoped to emulate and become a famous astrophysicist himself someday.
But that's not to say that Tuyen was the stereotypical Asian boy whose idea of a good time was a hard equation, or who was always meek and obedient. Even as a child he had a mischievous side, most notably his tendency to take toys and electronics apart to see how they worked. He liked to play tricks on some of his dumber schoolmates when his parents and teachers weren't around (and became very good at getting away with it, too). He also enjoyed the challenge of taking candies and other small items from stores just to see if he could get past the scanners set up at the door. When he got old enough to go certain places by himself, well, more often than not he wasn't where he told his parents he was going to be. Sometimes he would even sneak out when his parents were sleeping. He tried smoking and drinking, but found he didn't like either. He never tried any kind of illegal drugs, mostly because he knew his sister would kill him if he did. You see, ever since she caught him sneaking back in, in the wee hours one morning and the two made a deal of favors for her silence, Tuyen had no secrets from his sister, and she appointed herself to make sure he didn't get himself into too much trouble. Neither his parents nor the local police were any the wiser of his more rebellious behaviors.
Tuyen became a Knight at age 15 and fought against the forces of the evil bony dude. The Senshi and Knights defeated bony dude in a climactic battle, but it took a lot out of them. When the other countries sent their nukes, the Senshi and Knights had very little left to give towards stopping them. The bombs were only stopped when Serenity and Endymion used their crystals to freeze the world and just about everyone on it for a thousand years. In his weakened state, he was one of the hundreds of millions who didn't survive the freezing, which is why he finds himself back at the Galaxy Cauldron.
The Other Me
Planetary Ties: Mercury, Earth
Planet Affiliation: Mercury Knight, Endymion's Guardian and Advisor
Alias: Thuy Hiep Si (Thuy Ngan being a word for Mercury according to Google Translate; it says Thuy Hiep Si is Mercury Knight)
Emotion of Influence: Intelligence
Senshi/ Knight Description: He wears a sapphire blue Nehru jacket and slacks, with a set of ice blue frog closures down the middle of the jacket, stylized feather patterns embroidered down the front at each side of the closures and wide bands of ice blue at the ends of each sleeve. Tiny wings of white feathers sprout from the ankles of his black dress boots. A white feathered domino mask (miraculously) hides his identity.
Other Important Information: His henshin device is an antique-looking gold-colored pocket watch with a Mercury symbol etched into its cover (since there was a pocket watch last time *shrugs*) His thrown weapons are jump drives, which he's very accurate at throwing, but sometimes the attack fizzles out before hitting the target and he has to stop to virus-scan the little device before it will be usable again.
